body
BACKGROUND
Youth Guidance operates the Becoming A Man (BAM) and Working On Womanhood (WOW) social- emotional learning programs that foster agency, integrated identity, and social cognitive skill- building for targeted students in grades 7-12 who have been exposed to traumatic stressors and face social, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional challenges.
In response to the need for more programming that keeps youth positively engaged during the summer, Youth Guidance Dallas will implement the BAM and WOW Scholar Training Academy (STA). This academy is a six-week, summer enrichment initiative that equips participants with knowledge, skills, and tools that will support their academic, professional, and personal growth and success. The STA will target youth impacted by violent crime and also prevent violent crime incidence by engaging youth in safe and skills-oriented programming.
The program runs Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM during which participants are guided through interactive lessons facilitated by BAM and WOW youth specialists, staff, and partnering organizations. Youth Guidance Dallas will partner with the City of Dallas to hold programming in local recreation centers in the communities closest to the schools served by the program.
Participants have access to curriculum-based group sessions as well as individual support services and curricula-aligned field trips and events. The curricula are grounded in a set of core program values that guide participants in learning, practicing, and internalizing key social-emotional skills.
