Body

BACKGROUND

On November 10, 2021, City Council authorized a construction services contract with Archer Western Construction, LLC. for Electrical and SCADA improvements at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant by Resolution No. 21-1846. On March 21, 2022, during a field investigation to install the influent pump suction piping at Influent Pump Station C, Archer Western noticed the exterior of the existing wall sleeves to remain were significantly deteriorated. Since Archer Western was already working on replacing the rest of the pipe and due to the size of the main and time constraints during replacement activities, it was agreed to have them do the repair and avoid a future shutdown of the facility.

This action will authorize an increase in the construction services contract for the repair of the existing corroded 66” wastewater pipes located inside Influent Pump Station C at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWWTP). The repair consists of cutting the existing plain end pipe on the dry side flush with the wall, machine/polishing the existing 66" wall pipe interior to remove all corrosion/rust damage to create an appropriate surface for welding a new sleeve, installing a new primed/coated pipe spool, and welding the new pipe spool to the existing pipe.

SWWTP Influent Pump Station C was constructed in 1985 as part of the Phase III 60 million gallon per day (MGD) plant expansion. Two 90-inch diameter pipes feed the east and west chamber inlet channel from the upstream collection system. The inlet channels split into a total of six screening channels. These channels feed two hydraulically connected wet wells. Flow from the Influent Pump Station C is then either pumped to the SWWTP’s treatment system or to the Peak Flow Basins. The potential failure of these 66” pipes would result in the plant’s inability to treat and process wastewater.
