Body
BACKGROUND
This item will provide funding for the Dallas Police Department (DPD) to support two full-time staff positions. These positions will be dedicated to the accreditation program within the DPD Planning and Crime Analysis Unit. The staff will identify and gather the necessary data to demonstrate compliance with current standards where applicable and to pinpoint gaps in existing policies and procedures that require further work to meet standards. Additionally, the staff will participate in accreditation training offered by the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation.
Pursuing accreditation will demonstrate that the department adheres to statewide public safety standards while assuring the community that our policies and actions are as transparent as possible. The accreditation process will involve a thorough review of all units and structures within DPD to better align operations with current best practices as identified by law enforcement experts. After receiving accreditation, ongoing compliance and reporting are required to maintain it and to renew it after four years, which may involve updating additional policies and procedures as new strategies are developed.
