Body
BACKGROUND
The City of Dallas and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have been working toward and recently completed the construction of the Dallas Floodway Levee Raise and Flattening as part of the Flood Risk Management component of the Balanced Vision Plan. As part of this work, the West Dallas Lake area includes a series of three lakes that provide opportunities to build on the implementation of the Balanced Vision Plan near Westmoreland Road.
Dallas is uniquely positioned to recognize our Native American history by naming these three lakes. In working with local Native American leaders in the region, the following is proposed:
• The 3 Sister Lakes: Comanche Nahmi Lake, Wichita ita:iʔh Lake, and Lipan Apache Mbátí Lake
(Each lake name incorporates the Native word for “sister” specific to that tribe: Comanche - Nahmi, Wichita
- ita:iʔh, and Lipan Apache - Mbátí.)
This naming honors Native American tribes historically associated with the Dallas area and surrounding region including Caddo, Comanche, Kiowa, Tawakoni, Wichita, Tonkawa, Waco, Lipan Apache, and Keechi.
