Body

BACKGROUND

The Dallas Police Department utilizes blocker trucks to enhance officer and public safety during traffic incidents on high-speed roadways. These vehicles are designed to provide a physical barrier between officers and oncoming traffic while responding to traffic crashes, roadway obstructions, and other emergency incidents.

The department currently operates two blocker trucks built on a Ford F550 chassis and equipped with a stake bed, crash attenuator, and Light Emitting Diode (LED) arrow board. Since implementation of the program in May 2023, these vehicles have been deployed more than 1,200 times citywide and have absorbed multiple impacts, preventing serious injury and loss of life.

The program was launched following the tragic death of Officer Penton, who was struck and killed by a motorist while working a freeway crash in February 2021. These vehicles now serve as a critical barrier between officers and oncoming traffic, significantly reducing the risk of injury or death.

This action will allow the department to purchase four additional blocker trucks using donated funds from QuikTrip Corporation. The additional vehicles will increase citywide coverage and availability, allowing for more frequent deployment to protect officers and the public during roadway incidents. The Dallas Police Department remains committed to expanding and improving roadway safety initiatives to ensure the well-being of both officers and the community.
