Body

BACKGROUND

The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture requested the submission of qualifications from artists or artist teams to design, fabricate and install a work of public art at the Forest Green Branch Library (the Project). Public Art Staff hosted community meetings and office hours to request information from the community about the final scope of Project including content and style. The scope was part of the published Request for Qualifications.

The Forest Green Branch location offers drought-tolerant contemporary landscaping, zeroscaping as well as mature trees to shade the general artwork area and already has existing access to power. The artwork will be installed facing the corner of Greenville Avenue and the library access road. The artwork will create an outdoor landmark to support the library programming and spark the curiosity of bypassers and patrons alike. What made this proposal competitive was the changing and programmable LED lights that can be adjusted to holiday or team colors as desired. This piece also includes a strong community engagement component that involves a short story writing contest, and the best stories will be read at story time with the first choice being published on the artist’s website next to the artwork.

Struzik Art LTD was selected from a shortlist of three artists for the Forest Green Branch Library Public Art Project in City Council District 10 by the Selection Panel after reviewing all artists’ design proposals.  All Public Art project scope items have been carefully considered and adhered to as well as City of Dallas Public Art policies.
