Body
BACKGROUND
This service contract agreement will authorize a contract for the deployment of 100 Artificial Intelligence (AI) -enabled data collection units to enhance operational efficiency and service delivery for the Department of Sanitation Services (SAN), in partnership with the Department of Code Compliance (CCS).
This contract will provide the purchase, installation, training, and support of camera technology mounted on 50 Sanitation brush and bulky waste collection trucks, with cameras positioned on both sides to capture curbside property conditions as part of regular collection routes.
This innovative technology will allow SAN to collect data on customer participation in brush and bulky item collection services, which vary by season and location, enabling staff to better align equipment and resources across the city, promote more efficient service delivery, reduce unnecessary mileage, and support long-term rate stability for customers.
In partnership with CCS, the system will also provide automated, citywide visual scans approximately every 30 days, producing real-time, actionable data on conditions such as illegal dumping, graffiti, and structural deterioration. These insights will allow CCS staff to shift from reactive enforcement and complaint-based inspections toward proactive identification of community needs, improving response times and resource deployment.
Beyond sanitation and code enforcement benefits, the platform supports data-informed planning, neighborhood outreach, and grant reporting, helping the City achieve a more efficient, service-first approach to community maintenance and education. Funding for this contract was approved by the City Council as part of the FY 2024-25 budget adoption in September 2025.
Key benefits:
• Automated Data Collection and Analysis
• Customizable Reporting and Analytics Dashboard
• Training and Ongoing Support for City Staff
• Enhanced Grant Application Support
