BACKGROUND

Fire-Rescue Officer William Scott Tanksley served the residents of the City of Dallas for 14 years as a fire-rescue officer. On February 10, 2014, Fire-Rescue Officer Tanksley passed away in the line of duty while assisting a motorist at the scene of an accident on the overpass of Interstate Highway (IH) 20 and Spur 408. On September 3, 2014, Fire-Rescue Officer Tanksley was honored with the Star of Texas Award, which is given to honor police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians who are seriously hurt or killed in the line of duty.

The City of Dallas desires to honor Fire-Rescue Officer Tanksley by designating the overpass of IH 20 and Spur 408 as the Firefighter William Scott Tanksley Memorial Bridge. The City of Dallas is coordinating with the Krodle Foundation and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to designate the overpass.

The Krodle Foundation is a foundation created in honor of fallen firefighter Lieutenant Todd Wesley Krodle, an 18-year veteran of the Dallas Fire Department, to support the families of Dallas Firefighters.

This action will authorize the City Manager to execute a Beautification and Maintenance Agreement with the Krodle Foundation to allow the Foundation to undertake and provide funding for the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of the memorial designation signage at the overpass of IH 20 and Spur 408. The City will also enter into a Named Marker or Memorial Marker Highway Sign Agreement with TxDOT for the fabrication and installation of the memorial designation signs, which will be a separate agenda item on the April 12, 2023, City Council Agenda.

The Krodle Foundation will be solely responsible for all costs arising from the Beautification and Maintenance Agreement for a period of ten years.
