Body

BACKGROUND

This public-private partnership builds upon the City of Dallas’ ongoing collaboration with the State of Texas through grant funding and with the University of North Texas at Dallas (UNTD) to advance law enforcement training through a shared commitment among state government, local government, and a public university. The partnership will provide the City of Dallas with a modern, state-of-the-art law enforcement training facility that enhances the education and professional development of both recruit and incumbent police officers. The new facility will support twenty-first century policing strategies, evidence-based training techniques, and opportunities for collaboration with community leaders, academic partners, and other stakeholders to strengthen public safety and advance excellence in law enforcement training and education.

This project supports the construction and implementation of a new Dallas Police Department (DPD) Law Enforcement Training Center (LETC) at the UNTD campus. The new LETC will replace the existing Dallas Police Academy facility, which is inadequate to accommodate the growing numbers of recruits and evolving regional law enforcement training needs. The existing facility lacks sufficient space, infrastructure, and amenities to support modern, hands-on training and adequately prepare recruits for the challenges of real-world policing.

The new LETC will address these deficiencies by providing a modern, expanded training facility designed to meet the City’s growing law enforcement needs and enhance the quality and capacity of DPD training programs.

This action will authorize the acceptance of Grant No. 4922902 in the amount of $10,000,000.00 from the Texas Office of the Governor, Criminal Justice Division for the construction and implementation of a new DPD LETC at the UNTD campus, located at 1200 East Camp Wisdom Road.
