BACKGROUND
On June 14, 2023, the City Council determined that the process for electing the Mayor Pro Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem, which were codified in the City Council Rules of Procedure to provide uniformity, transparency, and clarity. The City Council required a ballot procedure for nomination and election of Mayor Pro Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem and approved that the Mayor Pro Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem would be elected for one-year terms.
On the day the City Council takes office, the City Council shall elect a Mayor Pro Tem and a Deputy Mayor Pro Tem to serve one-year terms that expire on the first Monday following the first voting agenda meeting in June. Before the end of the initial one-year term, the City Council shall elect a Mayor Pro Tem and a Deputy Mayor Pro Tem to serve one-year terms that expire on the day a new city council takes office. If the position of Mayor Pro Tem or Deputy Mayor Pro Tem becomes vacant, the City Council shall elect a Mayor Pro Tem or Deputy Mayor Pro Tem to serve for the remainder of the one-year term.
This action provides for the election for a Mayor Pro Tem and Deputy Mayor Pro Tem to serve beginning Monday, June 15, 2026, and expiring on the day the new City Council takes office.
