BACKGROUND

The Jim Miller Pump Station located at 5200 Jim Miller Road in Dallas, Texas is one of the largest and most critical pumping facilities in the Dallas Water Utilities Department potable water distribution system. The twenty-million-gallon reservoir receives and stores water from the East Side Water Treatment Plant and supplies water to central, east, and north Dallas, as well as Pleasant Grove. The pump station was constructed in 1950, the reservoir was added in 1978, and a major expansion of the pump station was constructed in 1985. Much of the equipment in the station dates back to the original construction and is inefficient and expensive to operate and maintain. In addition, operation of the facility can cause surge issues at the pump station and in the distribution system. Unmitigated surge can damage equipment and rupture pipelines potentially leading to a disruption in water service and damage to private property.

On June 22, 2022, the City Council authorized a construction services contract with Eagle Contracting, LLC for improvements to the Jim Miller Pump Station and Reservoir. The improvements when completed will bring the pump station up to current building codes and design standards, with a focus on mitigating surge, increasing efficiency, improving site security, and extending the service life of the pump station and reservoir.
