Body
BACKGROUND
The City of Dallas owns and operates two wastewater treatment plants with a combined treatment capacity of 280 million gallons per day. Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP) is the largest of the two plants, located just south of downtown. The treatment facility is divided into two plants, the Dallas Plant and the White Rock Plant. Screened and de-gritted wastewater is sent to primary clarifiers that reduce suspended solids and loading on downstream processes to minimize operational problems and lower energy consumption.
Dallas Water Utilities has identified a need to improve primary clarification and de-gritting for the Dallas Plant at CWWTP. Primary Clarifiers A and B were originally constructed in the 1930's and 1940's and are experiencing severe deterioration of the concrete structure and associated equipment due to corrosion. Poor hydraulics are also limiting the capacity of the Dallas Plant and the construction of new clarifiers is necessary to achieve adequate capacity to meet permit renewal requirements. In addition, grit from incoming wastewater is tearing up pumps and equipment in the clarifiers and creating maintenance and operational issues at both the Dallas and White Rock Plants. Maintenance staff has to shutdown the clarifiers on a regular basis to clean out the accumulation o...
