BACKGROUND
Chapter IV, Section 9, of the City Charter provides the City Council shall canvass and certify the results of a city election in accordance with the provisions of the Texas Election Code. Section 67.003 (b) of the Texas Election Code provides, in part, "For an election held on the uniform election date in May, the local canvass must occur not later than the 11th day after election day and not earlier than the later of: (1) the third day after election day .. " For the Saturday, May 6, 2023 general election, the canvass could be made any time between Tuesday, May 9, 2023, and Wednesday, May 17, 2023.
This action authorizes the Mayor to appoint an ad hoc canvassing committee to meet and review the returns of the May 6, 2021 general election and special election; and submit a canvass report to the full City Council at the regular scheduled meeting on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. The canvass must be held no later than Wednesday, May 17, 2023 in order to meet the deadlines required to swear in the full City Council on Monday, June 19, 2023.
In the event a runoff election is necessary, a canvassing committee will be addressed at that time.
