BACKGROUND

This service contract will be used for the design and installation of a splash pad at the Old East Dallas Work Yard Park located at 4900 Alston Avenue. This project will enhance critical greenspace in a historically underserved neighborhood.

The Old East Dallas Work Yard is centrally located near elementary schools, day care centers, residential neighborhoods and the Santa Fe Trail. The splash pad is one of several planned improvements to the historic park, including the expansion of the existing basketball court and the addition of sidewalks, seat walls and a restroom building.

Splash pads have become one of the most popular methods of encouraging physical activity amongst youth, helping to develop children's aerobic capacity, muscular strength, agility, reflexes, coordination and motor skills. In addition, Splash pads employ an inclusive design approach that incorporates both accessibility and universality. This allows for the accommodation of as many people as possible, regardless of age or physical ability.
