BACKGROUND
The Dallas Water Utilities Department (DWU) owns and operates an existing 60-inch diameter reinforced concrete wastewater main that was constructed in the 1950’s and is in poor structural condition. Given the flow carried by the existing wastewater main and existing condition, it has a high likelihood and consequence of failure and requires rehabilitation to improve its condition and extend its useful life. Rehabilitation of the existing main was identified as part of larger improvements recommended in DWU’s 2020 Comprehensive Wastewater Collection System Assessment Update.
Due to environmental and easement constraints and the existing pipe’s deteriorated condition, it was determined that the best course of action would be to first renew the existing pipe via rehabilitation to address the high risk and consequence of pipe failure. Pipeline renewal will enable more time for comprehensive planning, design, land acquisition, and construction of a larger capacity relief main. This action will authorize a construction service contract for the rehabilitation of approximately 5,150 linear feet of existing 60-inch diameter wastewater main.
