BACKGROUND

In January 2008, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office assumed primary freeway coverage responsibility in southern Dallas County, allowing the Dallas Police Department to reallocate patrol resources to neighborhood and community policing efforts while the Sheriff’s Office provides targeted traffic enforcement and incident response on major limited-access highways.

Since fiscal year 2012, the City of Dallas and Dallas County have partnered through interlocal agreements to support the Dallas County Highway Traffic Program. This collaboration has enhanced freeway safety, improved response times, mitigated congestion, and supported regional air quality objectives.

City Council approved the latest three-year Interlocal Agreement with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office on March 25, 2026 by Resolution Number 26-0504. After this approval, the Dallas County Commissioners Court did not approve the new agreement, and therefore, the Interlocal Agreement was never fully executed. However, the Sheriff’s Department has continued to provide services through the end of August 2026. This new action will allow the City to pay for services rendered.
