BACKGROUND

The Department of Aviation is seeking to become a full partner in the existing University of Texas at Arlington (UTA)/Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Transportation Leadership Academy in order to leverage access to students who are interested in a career in transportation. The UTA/DART/City of Dallas Department of Aviation Transportation Leadership Academy will provide the City of Dallas Department of Aviation with a unique opportunity to find highly qualified students who wish to pursue careers in the transportation field. Students will work as interns in the Department of Aviation and will also attend Saturday seminars at the airport on select Saturdays throughout the year. These sessions will expose the Transportation Leadership Academy students to different aspects of the Department of Aviation with the goal of encouraging highly qualified students to pursue employment with the department after graduation.  The primary purpose of this partnership will be to develop a recruiting workforce talent pipeline with access to graduating college seniors.

The UTA/DART Transportation Leadership Academy was started in 2017 as a partnership between UTA and DART in an effort to engage students who desire a career in the transportation industry. Approximately 10 seniors are selected for the Transportation Leadership Academy annually. The year-long program includes a paid internship between the junior and senior year.

In order to meet our workforce needs, we are seeking more efficient and innovative ways to meet the needs of our workforce and of our diverse community. In Fall of 2019, the City of Dallas entered into a one-year arrangement with UTA/DART Transportation Leadership Academy by supporting four students. The Department of Aviation is seeking to become a full partner in the Transportation Academy in 2020, thereby increasing the number of student fellowships from 4 to 5. This program creates exposure, equity and opportunity for students while supporting the Mayoral priorities of ensuring that the City of Dallas has a “future-proof” workforce.
