BACKGROUND

The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) receives grant funding from the Governor’s Office to administer the Community Inclusion Grant Program. These funds are made available through the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. TCDD awards approximately 70 percent of funds received to projects around the state of Texas.

The maximum funding request for this grant program is $15,000.00. The Dallas Park and Recreation Department (DPARD) Inclusion Project includes two specific components within the Recreation Services Division: sensory boxes and two access/abilities tents. These will provide individuals with developmental disabilities access to behavioral supports and interventions that can greatly improve their experience and exploration while participating in park and recreation events or programs.

If funded, the DPARD Inclusion Project will include designated sensory stimulus-reduction areas at recreation centers or event tents, that are outfitted with a variety of soothing sensory manipulatives to help individuals navigate episodes of heightened anxiety. This project will enhance DPARD’s ability to accommodate the sensory and behavioral needs of our participants with developmental disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder. This project will generate opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their families to participate in more DPARD programs and build broad public awareness of equity measures the City and the department strive to put forward.
