BACKGROUND

Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) awards competitive grants to libraries and regional library systems across the state to support literacy and educational initiatives. The Dallas Public Library is the recipient of three such grants from TSLAC.

The FY 2020 TSLAC Cares-Cycle1 Grant will build on the success of the FY20 hotspot lending program. The grant will enable the purchase of computing equipment and accessories to pair with hotspots for lending. Combining a means for internet access and the technology to utilize it will enable Dallas residents to participate in work skills training, school study, and entertainment that might otherwise go unconnected.

The TSLAC Special Projects 2021 Grant will engage teenagers with technology they won’t have access to in their homes and schools. The project specifically targets students ages 12-16 in two economically depressed neighborhoods in Dallas. Through hands-on STEM projects with real-world applications, the library will provide them with the opportunity to gain 21st century skills and perhaps discover a talent or interest that could lead to a future career. The Special Projects grant will allow the library to hire a staff person dedicated to this effort as well as purchase the types of advanced equipment that is out of reach for current budgets.

The TSLAC Texas Reads 2021 Grant will develop regular programming for individuals with memory-impaired older adults and caretakers. Grant funds would be used to develop adult storytime kits in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, so high quality evidence-based programming can be reproduced easily throughout the library system. Developing library programming for memory-impaired older adults and their caretakers would provide free opportunities for engagement close to their homes.
