BACKGROUND

The City of Dallas is a core member of the GARE, a project of Race Forward. In Summer 2020, GARE announced a total of $110,000.00 available to member jurisdictions, with a maximum award of $20,000.00, through the Innovation and Implementation Fund, made possible by the Surdna Foundation. The purpose of this funding cycle was to support public sector partnerships with artists and cultural workers to shape racially equitable public policy and develop and implement inclusive narratives that advance racial justice.

In partnership with the Office of Equity and the Code Compliance Department, the Office of Arts and Culture (OAC) proposed a pilot project to transform a vacant lot in southern Dallas into a community sculpture garden and gathering place, in partnership with local artists and the neighborhood.
