BACKGROUND
As established in Chapter 2, Article X of Dallas City Code, the Public Art Program of the Office of Arts and Culture works to include works by visual artists in public places of the City using a percentage of city capital improvement projects. Under this program, a commission for artwork at Fire Station No. 36 was initiated via engagement with the Department of Public Works and Dallas Fire Department staff.
Michael Pavlovsky was recommended for this Public Art project by the selection panel comprised of art professionals, representatives from Fire Station No. 36, and representatives from the Department of Public Works.
Artist Background
Michael D. Pavlovsky is an artist specializing in painting and sculptures; and began his lifelong pursuit as a student under Patrick Carter. Pavlovsky earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Texas A & M University in 1982; and he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas in 1990. His work includes over ninety juried and invitational exhibitions. Pavlovsky has previously completed two public art projects for the City of Dallas and has received numerous awards throughout the United States and Japan for his work.
Project Description
The working title for this proposed sculpture is At the Ready. It shows a firefighter in full turn-out gear symbolically holding a Dallas Pike. This representational sculpture is not intended to portray a specific firefighter engaging an any specific task or action, but rather general reference to a City of Dallas Firefighter. The sculpture will be made of bronze. It will be approximately 6 feet 8 inches tall and 32 inches wide. It will require routine maintenance of washing and waxing every three to five years.

On January 7, 2019, the Public Art Committee recommended initiation of a short-list selection process for the Fire Station No. 36 Project.
On January 19, 2019, the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission recommended initiation of a short-list selection process for the Fire Station No. 36 Project.
On June 2, 2020, the Public Art Committee recommended artist Michael Pavlovsky for the commission of selected artwork at Fire Station No. 36.
On June 18, 2020, the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission recommended Michael Pavlovsky for the commission of selected artwork at Fire Station No. 36.
