BACKGROUND
On May 27, 2020, City Council accepted the National Park Service (NPS) Civil Rights Grant for $50,000.00. The NPS made funding available to the City of Dallas under the African American Civil Rights Grant Program to document, interpret, and preserve the sites related to African American Civil Rights in the 20th Century; and for creation and sharing of a body of research and educational material about the 1936 Hall of Negro Life at Fair Park.
The grant-funded project will document primary sources through oral histories from scholars and people who lived through the Civil Rights movement, as well as research to discover lost and archived information about African American history and Civil Rights events in Dallas. The project will culminate in a video, resources for the creation of a traveling exhibit, podcasts, and will enable this important story to be told to current and future generations in Dallas and beyond.
The grant proposal and project were made in partnership with Fair Park First, Inspire Art Dallas, and local historians Mr. Phillip Collins, Dr. W. Marvin Dulaney, and Dr. George Keaton.
Inspire Art Dallas, Inc. is a community partner dedicated to using advocacy, fundraising, and public events to encourage the flourishing of the Public Art Program of the City of Dallas (collectively, “Dallas Public Art”) and enriching the experiences of citizens and visitors in the City of Dallas.
Public Art is a division of the Office of Arts and Culture of the City of Dallas. Grant funds will be used for the exploration of the history of the Hall of Negro Life.
PRIOR ACTION/REVIEW (COUNCIL, BOARDS, COMMISSIONS)
On May 27, 2020, City Council authorized the acceptance of the National Park Service African American Civil Rights Grant program by Resolution No. 20-0825.
