body

BACKGROUND

The City currently observes nine holidays. In June 2021, President Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth (June 19) a federal holiday. The City Manager’s budget recommends aligning City holidays with federal holidays, and continuing to observe the day after Thanksgiving, which is not a federal holiday. In FY 2021-22, the City will begin observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day on the second Monday in October, Veterans Day on November 11, and Juneteenth on June 19, for a total of 12 paid holidays.

FISCAL INFORMATION

No cost consideration to the City. The FY 2021-22 General Fund budget includes $600,000 in additional funding in Dallas Fire Rescue and $7,500 in additional funding for Building Services for the additional holidays. The cost of each additional holiday may vary based on minimum staffing requirements in departments such as Dallas Fire Rescue, and Sanitation. Other City departments that work on holidays will reschedule the holiday to avoid increased cost. Additional holidays may result in lost productivity.
