BACKGROUND

The National League of Cities (NLC) serves as a resource and advocate for the nation's cities and their leaders. NLC serves the interests of 19,000 cities, towns and villages in the United States (U.S.) as well as professionals working in municipal government. NLC focuses on advocating cities’ positions with Federal lawmakers in Washington, D.C. NLC holds two annual conferences - one in the fall in a different U.S. city, and one in the spring in Washington, D.C. Additional meetings and events are held as directed by the League’s leadership.

The Texas Municipal League (TML) coordinates and advocates for a legislative program set by member cities at the state and federal level. TML has attorneys on staff to answer general legal questions about municipal law, monitor federal and state laws and regulations, as well as city-related developments in the courts. TML offers training opportunities through an annual conference, workshops and webinars. TML provides resources and experts to assist members with seizing opportunities or creatively solving problems.

The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) is an official non-partisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. USCM holds a Winter Meeting each January in Washington, D.C. and an Annual Meeting each June in a different U.S. city. Additional meetings and events are held as directed by the Conference leadership. USCM members speak with a united voice on organizational policies and goals. Mayors contribute to the development of national urban policy by serving on one or more of the conference’s standing committees. Conference policies and programs are developed and guided by an Executive Committee and Advisory Board, as well as the standing committees and task forces which are formed to meet changing needs.

During the Conference’s Annual Meeting in June, standing committees recommend policy positions they believe should be adopted by the organization, which collectively represent the views of the nation’s mayors and are distributed to the President of the United States and Congress.

The Dallas Regional Mobility Coalition (DRMC) is a transportation advocacy group made up of cities, counties and transportation agencies in a five-county region (Dallas, Denton, Collin, Rockwall and Ellis). DRMC’s primary mission is to advance critical mobility projects through advocacy efforts with state and federal elected officials and regional transportation agencies. DRMC represents local governments from the fourth largest region in the country with over 7.0 million residents, a regional gross domestic product (GDP) of over $447 billion, 30% of the state’s overall GDP, and headquarters of 18 Fortune 500 companies.

TEX-21 works to join cities, counties, private businesses, ports, and transportation entities in a collective, informed voice to the State and Federal Executive and Legislative Policymakers to improve transportation in Texas. TEX-21 uses strategies to increase investment in multi-modal transportation infrastructure, improve the planning and management of our transportation facilities, and increase the awareness of the importance of transportation to all areas of Texas.
