BACKGROUND

Authorize the acceptance of a grant award for the CO-OP in the amount of $55,497.00 from the TPWD for the Outdoor Adventures headquartered at Samuell Farm, 100 US-80, Mesquite, Texas.

The TPWD administers the CO-OP Program Grant. Funding for this program comes from a portion of the state sales tax on sporting goods through the Texas Recreation and Parks Account, the Texas Large County and Municipality Recreation and Parks Account, and from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund.

The CO-OP grant provides funding to tax-exempt organizations for programming that engages under-served populations in TPWD mission-oriented outdoor recreation, conservation and environmental education activities. The funds are used to introduce under-served populations to environmental and conservation programs as well as TPWD’s mission-oriented outdoor activities.

Dallas Park & Recreation Department’s (DPARD) Outdoor Adventures program began with a CO-OP grant in 2016, and since that time has introduced thousands of urban youth, families, and individuals to outdoor recreation. DPARD will enhance our current program through extended touch points while continuing to reduce barriers to participation.

The first component of the project, the State Parks Camping Program will introduce participants from urban communities to State Parks in Texas by providing weekend camping trips at different state parks. This program will focus on education, providing camping supplies, and support and guidance to enhance the camping experience for all.

The second component of the project is an outdoor archery program for our recreation summer camp participants.  This progressive archery program focuses on the fundamentals of archery and necessary skills to successfully participate in the sport.
