BACKGROUND
In May 2021, the City Council authorized a contract award to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to conduct a Fleet Electrification Feasibility Study in support of the Comprehensive Environmental Climate Action Plan (CECAP). The study was completed in May 2022 and later briefed to the Environmental Commission, Environmental and Sustainability Committee and the City Council.
With the City Council adoption of the FY 2023 Budget, the Department of Equipment and Fleet Management (EFM) was provided funding to purchase electric vehicles (EV), EV infrastructure and software. Also, EFM has applied for several grants with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and will continue to seek grant awards and other funding resources to offset the cost of electrifying the fleet. The costs of the electric vehicle supply equipment will be capitalized with the purchase of electric vehicles and funded by existing fleet replacement dollars. The charge management software will allow the City to collect data, implement controls on fuel consumption, monitor usage and more efficiently operate the electric vehicle fleet.
