BACKGROUND
Chapter III, Section 1 of the Dallas City Charter provides for a city council composed of 15 members: a mayor who serves for a term of four years, and 14 council members representing single-member council districts who each serve for a term of two years.
Chapter IV, Section 3 of the Dallas City Charter provides that the general election to elect members of the city council be held on the first authorized election date after March 1 of each odd-numbered year. For 2023, that date is Saturday, May 6, 2023. Section 3.005(c) of the Texas Election Code requires that the May election be ordered not later than the 78th day before election day. For the May 6th general election, the deadline for ordering the election is Friday, February 17, 2023. The City of Dallas will order their May 6, 2023 general election on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 as it is the last regularly scheduled city council meeting to order the election without having to schedule a special meeting.
